At least 2 of the 26 museums situated in the three battle
zones of the Georgian conflict have been badly affected. Please, keep in mind
that - due to the circumstances - some information are only reported and not
proven.
South Ossetia
We have no information on museums in Tshkinvali, but there are two museums north of Tskhinvali:
The museum
has been bombed at the beginning of the war; the village was bombed as
well and burned down on August 16; state of the collections are unknown;
staff had been evacuated; museums director is
alive; his house has been marauded on August 16 as well.

Shida Kartli (region south of South Ossetia)
Its capital
Gori has two museums.
All 37
staff members and their families had been evacuated to Tbilisi, they returned on August 24.
- Ioseb Stalin State Museum; the museum is slighly damaged (some windows
broken)
but not touched . Part of the collection had been tranfered
to Tbilisi, but also the collection left in the museum is safe
In the Gori
region there are 7 museums, among them the important
- Uplistsikhe Historical & Architectural
Museum-Reserve: not damaged.
Samegrelo – Zemo Svanti (Region next to Abkhazia)
Zugdidi (regional capital)
Senaki
- Zhiuli Shartava Senaki Local Museum: not damaged
- Senaki Picture Gallery: slightly damaged by
explosions in the city
Poti (Black Sea side city)
- Poti Colchian Culture Museum: no damage reported
In other parts of the region are 11 museums: no damage
reported
